The Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT) is located in the heart of Salt Lake, Sector III, Kolkata. Although the campus is relatively compact around 5 acres, it offers a peaceful and green academic environment. The institute, originally established in 1919 for leather technology, now houses three major departments: Leather Technology, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Information Technology (IT).
GCELT’s infrastructure includes well-equipped laboratories across departments. Leather Technology labs feature tanning machinery, chemical testing setups, and footwear CAD/CAM systems. For CSE and IT students, there are modern computing labs, AI and DBMS labs, and a project lab to support innovation. The central library is RFID-enabled and offers over 18,000 books, along with national and international journals. The college also has a playground supporting cricket, football, volleyball, and indoor games, and organizes annual sports events and technical/cultural fests like Punormilon and Enginerds.
However, there are areas for improvement. While hostel facilities are adequate and within walking distance, the absence of a proper on-campus canteen and intermittent Wi-Fi are frequently mentioned by students. Maintenance issues in labs and classrooms also surface in reviews, although most students still appreciate the peaceful learning environment.
