August 28, 2025GATE 2026 registration is now open at gate2026.iitg.ac.in for admission to M.Tech and research programs. About GCELT Kolkata
Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology, also known as GCELT, is a government college established in the year 1919. Located in Salt Lake, Kolkata, West Bengal, the college is affiliated with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT). The institute is also approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT) is located in the heart of Salt Lake, Sector III, Kolkata. Although the campus is relatively compact around 5 acres, it offers a peaceful and green academic environment. The institute, originally established in 1919 for leather technology, now houses three major departments: Leather Technology, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Information Technology (IT).
GCELT’s infrastructure includes well-equipped laboratories across departments. Leather Technology labs feature tanning machinery, chemical testing setups, and footwear CAD/CAM systems. For CSE and IT students, there are modern computing labs, AI and DBMS labs, and a project lab to support innovation. The central library is RFID-enabled and offers over 18,000 books, along with national and international journals. The college also has a playground supporting cricket, football, volleyball, and indoor games, and organizes annual sports events and technical/cultural fests like Punormilon and Enginerds.
However, there are areas for improvement. While hostel facilities are adequate and within walking distance, the absence of a proper on-campus canteen and intermittent Wi-Fi are frequently mentioned by students.
